Footage description: Jean Harris, a psychiatrist and Graham Mills, a senior social worker, work as a team and together run the Child and Family Psychiatric Service in Dunstable. They describe how they link their work to the activities of a network of professional social service agencies. In their office they plan the days activites with their secretary. Their first appointment is at the Parkside Nursery. Annette Irwin, Matron for the nursery, describes the range of services they provide. The three of them discuss what action they can take to help one of the children at the nursery. On the way back to their office Jean and Graham talk over the meeting. Jean argues that the service she provides largely upon the co-operation and informed interest of administrators who link services to children and their families. She and Graham meet with Ann Williamson and Nuer Khandwala, Nursery Officers, to discuss ways of Improving relations between their unit and health visitors. Jean argues that they need a formal framework to ensure the development of personal contacts with health visitors. Jack in their office Jean and Graham check on further appointments and meetings that have been arranged for them. At the Social Services Area Office Jean and Graham discuss with two social workers Paul Morgan and Myrna Moodie, how they could get involved with one of their long-term cases. Paul Morgan describes the position of the family and how he has has cleared the way for Jean to be introduced to the family. Myrna Moodie argues that Jean and Graham provide a useful back-up service. Jean and Graham justify their method of working together. Gill Walker, social worker, argues that often families will accept a more structured intervention through Jean and Graham. The final section of the programme shows Jean and Graham discussing another family with Gill Walker and Raymond Anness, social worker. They review the case history and the best way in which they can be involved in the case and also some of the problems involved in co-ordinating all the agencies dealing with the case. Jean Harris describes some of the benefits she has gained through working as a team in this difficult area.
