Footage description: This programme shows Jean Harris, psychiatrist and Graham Mills, senior social worker at work counselling two clients, Mr and Mrs Walpole. The programme opens with an explanation of the family's problems which have emerged because of divorce and access to the children of the first marriage since the divorce. The rest of the programme then consists of edited extracts from the counselling session. Jean Harris tries to persuade the Walpoles that they should be more concilatory towards the other couple in the case. When this approach fails she talks about the problem that their eldest child faces in reconcilling the two sets of parents. They then discuss how people feel hurt during and after divorce proceedings. Graham and Jean describe their feelings of frustration at not being able to alter the attitude of the parties involved. They sympathise with the children who must feel equally torn. Mrs Walpole asks if the two social workers could speak with the eldest child, so that she could get her frustrations into the open. Graham and Jean refuse to do this as they feel it is a family problem, which they as relative strangers cannot properly deal with in a short period of time. They offer a further family meeting with the children present if the Walpoles would like it.
