Description
You know from the Course Unit the important role that radioactive decay plays in stabilising otherwise unstable nuclides, the theory behind it all. You can't get a practical 'feel ' for it at home..., so we've set up a demonstration for you, to fill this gap. To show you is Guy Fletcher, Visiting Fellow at the Open University. Prof Fletcher demonstrates the presence of radioactivity with the use of a Geiger counter. He devises a crude radiation classification based on different abilities to penetrate various materials. The whole of this unit is about the nucleus, and in the text you've worked out the radius of the oxygen nucleus from high momentum electron scattering results. What we are going to show you now is a very simple way of solving that problem of determining the size of the nucleus of a material - quickly and approximately - using a very simple experiment.
