Engineering

Engineering has been defined as “the application of scientific knowledge to the solution of practical problems”. This definition implies many things: that a broad range of knowledge is needed (practical problems are rarely one-dimensional); that the mere possession of a body of knowledge is not enough in itself – solving problems requires imagination and the mental agility to find the best angle from which to work; and that the engineer’s motivation is to innovate for the sake of making things better.

We offer the following undergraduate and postgraduate Engineering qualifications that provide alternatives depending on prior study and circumstances.

Undergraduate qualifications

Qualification Lead: Alec Goodyear

Qualification Manager: Mary Keys

Please note that our BEng (Hons) and the integrated masters MEng are general engineering qualifications. Students are not awarded a named degree for a more specialised field within engineering at the end of their studies. However we do offer routes through our BEng (Hons) and MEng that enable students to focus on an engineering theme that they are most interested in. Each route contains modules in the chosen specialism.

As part of these qualifications we have prime responsibility for certain modules that can be taken as standalone modules for interest or continuing professional development for those with adequate prior knowledge and experience:

Postgraduate qualifications

Qualification Lead: Shahram Taherzadeh

Accreditation

The BEng (Hons), MEng and MSc have been accredited with the following institutions:

Further details of the accreditation can be found on the Engineering Council database: ACAD

The student-facing pages on the Engineering subject site are also kept up to date with current accreditation status information

Free courses and educational resources

We actively contribute to The Open University’s provision of open educational resources through OpenLearn and other open media channels. We have provided many study units and rich media assets derived from current and discontinued modules with others arising from our research and scholarship work. These can be found under the nature and environment section of OpenLearn but we list some of them below.
