Description
In this talk, Professor Eric Lunzer examines the interelationship of thought and language. Does the ability to think develop in a child before the ability to use language? The answer seems to be ye...s. But still, isn't it possible to improve a child's thinking by teaching him or her language? The answer seems to be no. Language learning is not sufficient by itself. A more fundamental change has occur, and that is, a change in knowledge. The "frames" of the title are knowledge frames, that is, the sum of knowledge that any person, infant or otherwise, has about a particular situation. The "turns" of the title relate to one of the pre-linguistic activities of a child involved in a game situation with it's mother. "Turn taking" is a precursor of the linguistic turn taking which constitutes conversation.
