The Open University staff newspaper 'Open House', reported after a visit to the Belfast office in 1974, that "several staff had been closely impacted by violence to family and friends, bomb or bullet damage to their homes."

This was also true over the following 25 years for both staff and students. In 1991, the wife of a senior member of OU staff in Belfast was very seriously injured in a bomb attack.
