Felicia Hemans (1793-1835)
Felicia Hemans (née Browne) was an English poet most well known for her poem 'Casabianca' which begins "The boy stood on the burning deck". She also created the phrase "The stately homes of England". Hemans was well regarded by poets including William Wordsworth. She died of dropsy at the age of 41.
"I hope to be more fortunate next year…"
Felicia Hemans' letter, written c.1830, is addressed to Louis Theodore Ventouillac (1796-1834) who was Professor of French Literature and worked as an editor and translator for Sampson Low. She declines a request (most likely to contribute to the religious magazine 'The Iris') on account of her health. She also sends her compliments to Rev Thomas Dale, the editor of 'The Iris'.
