Edward Maltby was an English clergyman who became the Bishop of Durham. He was a controversial character due to his liberal views and particularly his ecumenism (the principle of Christian unity between different Christian denominations). Maltby provided financial support to Durham University during his life. He amassed a large fortune for which he was publicly criticised. He established the Maltby Fund to finance building work in the diocese of Durham.
