Description
Joseph and Hannah Sturge (née Dickinson) were English Quakers and abolitionists. They married in 1846 (Joseph was previously married to John and Anne Cropper's daughter Eliza who died) and together they supported campaigns of pacifism, worker's rights and the abolition of slavery. Joseph Sturge organised the World Anti-Slavery Convention held in London in 1840. He co-founded the 'Morning Star' newspaper in 1855 to promote the Peace Society and other causes. Hannah Sturge was an active member of several societies including the Ladies' Temperance Association and she organised a "Penny Offering" campaign to support the work of Harr...iet Beecher Stowe.
