Description
Paul Cullen was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, previously of Armagh, and Primate of Ireland. He was appointed the first Irish cardinal in 1866. Cullen was keen on promoting Roman Catholic religious education in Ireland which included creating a Roman Catholic university founded in Dublin in 1851. He invited John Henry Newman to be rector of the new university. In 1864 he founded the 'Irish Ecclesiastical Record', a monthly journal which remained in publication until 1968.
