Description
Barbara Hart is from Portland Oregon and gained her PhD from Trinity College Dublin. She researched the life of Elizabeth Kennedy while she was a student at Trinity College in 2011. Elizabeth Kennedy was Senior Welfare Officer in Long Kesh Internment Camp and the Compounds (the Maze and Long Kesh Prison) 1971-1977. She was instrumental in getting educational facilities for the internees and inviting The Open University to offer courses to the internees in 1972. Elizabeth organised voluntary lecturers to come in to the Compounds to give classes for sentenced prisoners in the early 1970s and was involved in negotiations in 1973 for Open Univ...ersity courses to be studied by Special Category prisoners. Elizabeth studied Humanities with The Open University 1975-1976 retired in 1977 due to ill health and died in 1978.
