Description
David Smyth attended school in Belfast left with seven O levels and two A Levels and started a third level course in higher education before his imprisonment in Long Kesh (the Compounds of the Maze and Long Kesh Prison) in 1977. He started his Open University degree in Psychology in 1980 and graduated in 1989. David gained certificates in Football Coaching and as a Fitness Instructor as well as studying for O and A Levels. He was released in 1989 and studied for a Master’s Degree in Computer Science a Diploma in Social Work and a Diploma in Criminal Justice Management at Queen’s University Belfast. David is an artist and designed the logo for the ‘Time to Think’ archive as a description of “…what the Open University meant to me in prison. The key to freedom. Both in there and out here”.
