Description
Sherard Osborn was a British Royal Navy admiral and Arctic explorer. He was commander of several engagements during the Opium and Crimean Wars. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath for his services. He was involved in several Arctic expeditions during the 1840s and 1850s, the first to search for lost explorer Sir John Franklin and his crew. He published an account of one voyage titled 'Stray Leaves from an Arctic Journal' in 1852. He retained a lifelong interest in Arctic exploration.

Description: In his letter, Sherard Osborn declines an offer from Sampson Low relating to the explorer Charles Francis Hall, the Arctic area he visited and his narrative about the Inuit (Eskimos). The letter is undated but must have been written before 1871 when Charles Hall died on an expedition to the North Pole.
