Description
There is not sufficient secondary education available in Botswana. In 1963 Patrick van Rensburg, a South African political exile, established a secondary school at Serowe where he tried to implemen...t positive attitudes to community service and to instil in his pupils a sense of responsibility which would meet the requirements of a poor developing country. The programme examines the establishment of the school and the development of its curriculum, together with the growth of the vocational brigades. Patrick van Rensburg, who has now left the school and works with the brigades, and Lawrence Notha, who has been teaching at the school for many years, comment on the development and hopes for the school and describe what they consider to be an alternative educational strategy for a developing country.
