Description
This first radio programme introduces one of the most important aspects of the course, namely the development of aural perception. Using the first 21 bars of the first movement of Beethoven's 5th S...ymphony, Dr. Dinah Barsham isolates the five basic elements of music: colour, dynamics, rhythm, harmony and melody. During the programme these elements are removed one by one from the passage of music in question and students are asked to listen to the results upon the original as each of the five elements is respectively removed, until only the melody remains. The five elements are also examined in more detail by comparing them with other examples of the element under consideration. Finally, the whole example is reconstructed from the melody back to its original fully orchestrated state, with all its five elements complete.
