Description
Roberta Crawley introduces the programme. Crawley explains that motivation in animals cannot be measured directly. She introduces a series of experiments which can look at motivation indirectly th...rough its antecedent events and the animals overt behaviour. The experiments are based on behaviour after food deprivation. Crawley introduces the T maze and demonstrates how it is used. A hooded rat is placed into the maze. Crawley explains the disadvantages of the T maze. Crawley introduces the activity wheel and describes how it is used. The experiment here takes motor activity as a measure of motivation. Crawley introduces an experiment which eliminates the drawbacks of the two experiments above. She lists the criteria for a good experiment to test motivation. Ken Weiss with a Skinner box. He explains how the apparatus works. Food pellet rewards are given to a rat at intervals when it presses a lever. The number of presses over time for rats which have been deprived on food for various lengths of time are monitored. Weiss performs the experiment with 3 rats. A 48 hour food deprived rat, a 24 hour food deprived rat and one which has not been deprived at all are used. Weiss shows and discusses the graphical record of the experiment for the 3 rats. Crawley introduces a film sequence which deals with the feeding control of rats by electrical stimulation. Crawley uses a diagram to explain how the experiment is performed (electro probes are inserted into the animal's brain and the animal is electro stimulated). Crawley uses a diagram of a rat brain showing the lateral hypothalmus and vertromedial nucleus to indicate area to be stimulated. Film sequence shows the experiment. Stimulus bound feeding of a rat after lateral hypothalmus stimulation, ventromedial stimulation or both. Stimulus traces are shown on an oscillscope. The stimulus is imposed on the rat. Another film sequence shows rats stimulating themselves by pressing a switch in the cage. Graph shows the results of rat self-stimulation. Crawley sums up the results.
