Footage description: Ron Johnson, voice over, introduces the programme, which centres on eleven and twelve year olds from a local council estate at the new Middle School in Norwich. In the first sequence teacher Terry Phillips gives a small group copies of two poems and leaves them to discuss these while being tape recorded. The idea is to encourage the child to develop their own language rather than the formal classroom language. A class discussion on "Let the balloon go" by Ivan Southall. Children relate the story to their own knowledge of handicapped children. Voice over, Terry Phillips gives his views on the value of this discussion. A small group discussion based on newspaper articles about spastic and thalidomide children. Again the children are encouraged to talk about their own experiences and Terry Phillips comments, voice over. Finally we return to the group using a tape recorder, first seen in sequence 1. Phillips comments voice over on the movement of their discussion and the value of the apparent irrelevancies it contains.
