Dr. Eric Miller of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations interviews Vicki Churcher, a social worker about to start work at a home for physically handicapped people. She expresses her expectati...ons and apprehensions about the job of care assistant. Film of Vicki on her first day at work, being shown around and introduced to the patients by a senior member of the staff. In interview afterwards Vicki describes her reactions to meeting patients who are severely handicapped. Shots of Vicki assisting the senior staff member, who discusses the work and the reactions of patients to the staff. Shots of two of the staff tending the bed sores of a patient with Vicki present. In interview with Eric Miller Vicki describes her feelings about the treatment of patients by staff. Film sequence of a care assistant demonstrate; to Vicki how she dresses a severely handicapped girl. Vicki, in interview, expresses her emotional reactions to methods of treating patients used by care assistants. Film of Vicki helping a care assistant get a patient out of bed. Afterwards she explains to Eric Miller her enthusiasm for helping patient get up in the morning. Shots of Vicki doing different tasks on her own - dressing a patient, serving and feeding patients at lunch. In voice over she describes; some of the problems that arise and gives her views on the work as a whole. One week later. Shots of Vicki doing different jobs around the home and in the work centre. She describes how her reactions to the work, have changed during the week, and detaiIs the ways she has found to communicate with the patients. Shots of patients watching TV. Film of a senior staff member allocating jobs to care assistants in the morning. In voice over Vicki describes the hierarchical staff structure and the passivity of the patients in the face of orders from above. She explains the attitudes of the other care assistants, and how she herself tries not to get emotionally involved.;Film of a young social worker during the first week of her placement as a residential care assistant in a home for the physically handicapped.
