| Footage description: | Opening sequence shows the day starting at Westwood House for mentally handicapped children in Southampton. Shots of houseparents working, dressing and cleaning a group of five children. Voice over. The houseparents give their views on their work. Breakfast scene with the same group of children. Voice over, the staff explain the objectives of Westwood House and the advantages of the small staff/child ratio. Shots of houseparent playing with children in the grounds of Westwood House. In voice over, she explains her own reactions to the children. Shots of houseparent with Lorna, aged 11, who is severely mentally handicapped and autistic. The houseparent explains Lorna's problems in voice over. Film of lunch time at Westwood House. A houseparent explains the problems of other children in the group: Carol, aged 10 who has mongolism, Charlie, aged 16 who is a spastic quadrapligic, Tina, aged 15 also with spastic quadrapligia and epilepsy. She lists their progress while at the House. Shots of physiotherapist arriving at Westwood House. In voice over she explains her job. Shots of her with Adrian, aged 6 and suffering from hydrocephalus, blindness, impaired hearing and left-side hemiplegia. She describes the progress he has made at the House. Shots of 3 of the group of children playing musical instrument with a houseparent. Film sequences illustrating the latter part of the day at Westwood House. Over shots of the evening meal a houseparent considers the progress of Adrain and Lorna. Shots of Adrian and Lorna being prepared for bed. Concludes with shot of Adrian in bed. |
