Footage description: | Shots of pupils testing home made submarine construction in a swimming pool. Marshall discusses the idea of constructional projects standing in front of a model representing various stages in the project work; initiation, information, construction etc. Buckley, a master at the school, discusses various projects with a number of pupils. The first project involves measuring air temperatures to predict fog. The pupil and Buckley discuss the feasibility of the work. The second project is concerned with a laser and the discussion concentrates on the problem of obtaining proper materials and information for the job. Making soap from caustic soda and animal fat is the next project. Designing an anemometer for use with a crossbow is the final project. Discussion centres on alternative design strategies. Sequence ends with the pupil testing the anemometer in the field. Marshall introduces the project which will be followed from initiation to conclusion. Shots of Townrow testing car brakes. The first meeting between Townrow and Buckley. Townrow discusses his idea for a project, what he wants to measure, how to do it etc. Some of Townrow's first design ideas are discussed, and the alternatives assessed. Townrow's original constructions are looked at. They involve using strain gauges and potentiometers. The final design of the measuring system is discussed. Buckley and Townrow look at the problems of calibration for accurate measurement. Two methods are shown and discussed. Townrow tries out his final design. Shots of him in his car, driving round and braking hard. Marshall sums up on the value of such advanced project work. |
