Footage description: Brief voice-over introduction by Mary Hoffman over classroom activities at Saffron Green First School. Barbara Chamberlaine is then observed taking a group of children in a sentence-building exercise, using firstly illustrated cards, and then word cards without illustrations. Hoffman introduces the next exercise, in which Chamberlaine gets a group of children to improve the structure of a lengthy sentence containing many 'ands'. Introductory remarks by Hoffman. Chamberlain takes one child for a reading lesson and encourages the use of anaphora. In a lengthy sequence, Chamberlaine helps a a group to structure an attributes matrix. The exercise involves identification of the characteristics of different fruits, and of their similarities and dissimilarities. After a brief comment from Hoffman on the last excercise, Chamberlaine takes a group of children through a cloze passage. She allows the children to fill the gaps with whatever words they think most suitable.
