Footage description: | David Potter introduces the programme, explaining that it consists of real and fictitious events. The first event is the election of a Conservative government in May 1979. Paul Lewis describes the policies that the new government had decided to follow, illustrated by quotes from the Conservative Party Election Manifesto. The second event described is the oil price rise of 30%, announced at the O.P.E.C. conference in July 1979. This is illustrated with shots of the conference. The reaction of western leaders is described and illustrated with films of the Tokyo Summit meeting. The third event described is the June budget of 1979, which launched large public spending cuts. Parts of the original budget speech are heard. Len Murray of the T.U.C. describes the campaign against the cuts. The N.U.M. conference, July 1979 is featured. |
