Footage description: | The programme opens with John Oates interviewing Aidan Macfarlane, a consultant paediatrician, in his Oxfordshire clinic. Macfarlane explains why he assess childrens' cognitive progcess as part of his general developmental testing programme. He also describes the kinds of test he performs. Macfarlane tests a 3 month old child who is present in the consulting room with his mother The test takes the form of questioning the mother about signs of development in the baby's behaviour, then using coloured blocks to test his vision and his handling ability. Another mother and child are observed being tested. This time it is a baby aged 6 months. The mother is questioned for her view of the baby's progress. Macfarlane tests the child's handling skills. Macfarlane next deals with a 10 month old child, he questions the mother about the baby's feeding and language progress, then tests his fine motor skills by giving him various objects to handle. The fourth child to be tested is 12 months old. His grip with his fingers is examined, tests his ability to build up blocks and to extract a bead from a bottle. The final baby tested is 19 months old. The tests include building with blocks, scribbling with a pencil, putting a bead in a bottle and turning the pages of a book. Macfarlane also encourages the child to speak. He questions the mother in some detail. Macfarlane concludes by explaining to Oates the benefits the mothers can get from these sessions. |
