Description
Religious Instruction (or Education), commonly known as R.E., is the one subject in the curriculum of state schools which is compulsory. Not only must all county schools in England and Wales alloca...te one period a week to it, but they must teach it according to their local authority's "Agreed Syllabus". This syllabus is determined by a Conference in which representatives of the Authority, the Church of England, the Free Churches and the teaching profession are equally involved. The film, shot in 1981, follows the activities of the Cambridgeshire Agreed Syllabus Conference and compares them with the more usual process of curriculum development as exemplified by the work of the Authority's Advisory Teacher in R.E. The programme asks whether this unique method of curriculum control is still appropriate. It was devised after the Second World War, when church attendance was more common practice than it is now, when interdenomination differences were pronounced and before the invention of modern methods of curriculum development.
