Abstract: There are many ways to associate an algebra to a given locally compact group G; in this talk we shall introduce two of them: the group algebra L^1(G) and the measure algebra M(G). We shall give some background on the problem of classifying the closed left ideals of a Banach algebra, before going on to discuss what is known for L^1(G) and M(G). Finally, we shall present some original results about the left ideals of M(G) which are closed in the weak*-topology.
It is intended that the beginning of the talk will serve as an introduction to this area of mathematics and should be accessible to a wide mathematical audience.
