Description
In this programme Donald Burrows introduces excerpts from Verdi's corpus of work, including parts of four operas and one song. This programme contains examples of the most nationalistic moments in ...Verdi's operas, points where, despite the ban on encores, which provided excuses for political demonstrations, the police were forced by the enthusiasm of the audiences to let the repeat go ahead. Such moments include the famous slaves chorus from Nabucco, where early Italian audiences identified themseleves with the Hebrew slaves, strangers in their own country. Also included is a sonf 'Suona la Tromba' (Sound the Trumpet) written in 1848, and at one time a strong contender to become the National Anthem of the new state of Italy.
