Description
This programme looks at social factors affecting the cognition of teenagers. Even if cognitive development does reach a mature stage of development in 16 year olds, there is no reason to believe th...at these complex cognitive structures will be utilised unless challenged or coaxed by formal and informal educational experiences. With so many adolescents pronouncing the verdict of 'boredom' on our present schooling practices, we thought that a look at schooling as an example of an external factor could raise some interesting questions. In this programme we gathered from various schools a group of adolescents who dislike the majority of their schooling experiences. The programme begins with the group discussing their reactions to school. After watching the discussion Dorothy Heathcote, an authority on the use of drama in education, plans a lesson with Liz Caines, one of her student teachers, which might challenge the cognitive potential of our group. Liz than conducts the lesson and begins to build a dramatic experience with the group. The programme ends with the group reassembled to discuss and evaluate the lesson.

Footage description: | The programme begins with Dorothy Heathcote conducting a drama class with some handicapped children. Next, a group of school students talk to Paula Masterman about school, their reactions to lessons and why they become bored by teachers' attitudes towards them. Following on from this discussion Dorothy and one of her pupils, Liz Caines, discuss how she should approach the group, allow them to react to her and involve them in a drama session. Liz Caines now leads the school children into a drama session. We see how she involves them all, gains their confidence and how the group responds by warming to the circumstances and becoming engrossed in the drama. Occasionally Liz halts the group and asks the students to reflect upon what they are doing. Later, the group discusses the drama session with Paula Masterman. She asks them how the techniques could be used to improve their normal teaching. |
