The Philosophy discipline welcomes application for graduate work on philosophy of language and conceptual engineering. The discipline has interests in questions such as:

  • What is meaning?
  • What is the nature of the cognitive relation we bear to language?
  • What role do our concepts play in philosophical inquiry?
  • Can revising concepts (such as gender or race concepts) enhance social justice?

Research and research students are at the heart of the discipline. In joining us, you would join a lively and friendly graduate community. The discipline hosts papers by visiting speakers throughout the year, and an annual graduate conference at which students give papers on their work in progress.

Entry requirements

Minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent). Most successful applicants to the research degree programme have an MA in Philosophy (or equivalent). If you are not a UK citizen, you may need to prove your knowledge of English.
