Cell and molecular biomedicine

Our research focuses on the molecular and cellular processes underlying health, ageing and disease. We have a particular focus on diseases that have a significant impact on society. Our aim is to identify both novel therapeutic targets and innovative therapeutic agents for these conditions.

Key themes of our research include:

  • Anti-cancer therapies
  • Ageing
  • Appetite and reproductive physiology
  • Cardiovascular disorders, including those affecting the cerebrovascular network such as multiple sclerosis and stroke, and those affecting the heart such as cardiac arrhythmias
  • Cell signalling and systems biology
  • Inflammation and immunity
  • Mechanisms underlying ageing at the organismal and cellular level
  • Molecular mechanisms of disease.

  • Regulation of cellular autophagic and apoptotic cell death
  • Werner Syndrome-related exonucleases in Drosophila; roles in nuclear and mitochondrial genome stability
  • Changes in signalling and ultra-structure in cardiomyocytes during ageing
  • Developing tissue engineered implantable devices for surgical repair of the nervous system
  • Analysis of changes in gastrointestinal appetite hormones and hypothalamic circuitry during pregnancy and lactation
  • Development of novel, robust 3D CNS tissue models for neurobiological studies and drug discovery
  • The response of human brain and endothelium and astrocytes to vasoactive mediators
  • Elucidating the molecular mechanisms contributing to blood-brain barrier breakdown in multiple sclerosis
