12. Horlock Building

Named after Sir John Horlock (1928-2015), the second Vice Chancellor of the University from 1981 to 1990. The building, previously known as Offices 1 and 2, opened in 1989. During his time as Vice Chancellor one of Horlock's priorities was to strengthen the OU in the areas of science and engineering, as well as leading the battle against funding cuts imposed by the government. Sir John also ensured the introduction of a taught Postgraduate Masters programme, oversaw the opening of the Open Business School in 1983 and the expansion of the OU into Western Europe.

The video on this page shows John Horlock speaking at a graduate press conference in 1983 about visitors to The Open University.
