Footage description: The programme opens with film of James Woodward arriving at work in his car. He describes himself as having physical and personal difficulties. The narrator identifies James' handicap as cerebral palsy, which a consultant paediatrician explains in detailed medical terms. James' mother describes the way in which his handicap was discovered and the opposition she had to overcome to have him educated. Photographs of James as a young child. Shots of Westerlea School, which is described by the narrator in James' own words. James' fear of the outside world described in his own words over photographs of the school grounds. Film of James as a child at Westerlea School demonstrating his physical handicaps. A consultant paediatrician explains the extent and consequences of these handicaps in detail, including their emotional effects. University of Hull Careers Advisor describes James' difficulties in applying for jobs. A research colleague from James' first job at the University of Lancaster describes his work and discusses with James his social life there. James' mother describes his feelings during a subsequent period of unemployment. James' second job at Banff County Council and his feelings about the job are described by the narrator. Shots of James at Banff. Another job at a Dumfries mental hospital is briefly mentioned. James' final job in P4B, the Management Education Branch of the Department of Health is described by senior staff. They explain how James coped with the work, and stress his ability to overcome his handicaps and to make a real contribution to the work of the Department.
