The Philosophy discipline welcomes applications for graduate work on ethics. We have particular strengths in epiphanies and the nature of experience, environmental ethics, the ethics of social roles and institutions and the ethics of sport.
Several members of the Philosophy Department have research interests in this area, including Sophie Grace Chappell who has published the monograph Epiphanies: an ethics of experience (OUP, 2022), and Alex Barber and Sean Cordell who have ongoing projects on role ethics and codes of ethics. Applicants are advised to consult the pages of potential supervisors listed to discover their research interests.
Research and research students are at the heart of the discipline. In joining us, you would join a lively and friendly graduate community. The discipline hosts papers by visiting speakers throughout the year, and an annual graduate conference at which students give papers on their work in progress.
Entry requirements
MA undergraduate degree (or equivalent). Most successful applicants to the research degree programme have an MA in Philosophy (or equivalent). If you are not a UK citizen, you may need to prove your knowledge of English.
