Mode of study

All of this module’s study materials are online. Online materials are composed of pages of text with images. Online materials also include links to external resources, online forums and online tutorial rooms. We can provide printable alternatives for module content.

Tuition strategy

This module provides a range of learning events: online module-wide and tutor group tutorials and one-to-one email/telephone discussions with your tutor. Although not compulsory, attendance at tutorials will help you consolidate your learning.

Practical work

In this module, you’ll undertake independent investigative work: field-based (including your garden), laboratory-based or data-based. You’ll design an investigation, collect data, analyse it and write a report. Investigative work is a required component of assessment.

Mathematical and scientific expressions and notations

You’ll be required to use mathematical and scientific symbols and expressions throughout the module and within assessment.

Diagrams and other visual content

The study materials contain some diagrams, graphs and photographs. Reading, interpreting and producing examples of these is an important part of the study of this module, and we assess this. We provide descriptions for essential figures.

Finding information

You’ll be required to search for, and make use of, third-party material online, and we assess this. The Library can provide alternatives for required/assessed research material to enable you to meet the learning outcomes of the module.

Specialist reading material

In this module, you’ll be working with a range of published peer-reviewed sources. These are delivered via the module website, accessed via the OU online library or other HEI library sources, or third-party online sites.

Assessment

This module has tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) and an end-of-module assessment (EMA) that you must submit via the online TMA/EMA service. We assess oral presentation skills in the EMA; we’ll consider alternative modes of presentation for disabled students.

Feedback

You’ll receive feedback from your tutor on your submitted Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs). This will help you to reflect on your TMA performance. You should refer to it to help you prepare for your next assignment. Feedback provides you with continuous knowledge and skill development. Discuss any concerns you have about this aspect of your learning with your tutor.

Schedule

We structure all Open University modules to a set timetable; you’ll need time-management skills to keep your studies on track. However, you’ll devise a timetable and manage your project independently. We’ll support you in developing these skills.
