BA (Honours) Business and Law - Learning outcomes

Educational aims

This joint degree in Business and Law aims to:

  • provide a thorough understanding of the legal system of England and Wales, alongside the role and function of law in a globalised world
  • equip you with the knowledge of business operations, structures, cultures, and functions, enabling you to understand and navigate the complexities of organisational management
  • encourage the exploration of how law impacts individuals and society, fostering an awareness of issues such as social justice, fairness, and equal opportunities, as well as the ethical responsibilities of businesses
  • develop the intellectual, analytical, and reflective skills required to evaluate legal and business practices and generate new insights and strategies
  • support the acquisition of transferable skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning, to prepare you for diverse career opportunities or further academic and professional development
  • prepare you for further legal education and training, and offer skills and knowledge relevant to effective business management in theory and practice.

By studying these disciplines, the degree cultivates adaptable, ethically minded individuals capable of making meaningful contributions in business, law, and beyond.

Knowledge and understanding

On completion of this qualification, you’ll have knowledge and understanding of:

  • the concepts, values, rules, and principles of the legal system of England and Wales, as well as some awareness of the powers exercised by the devolved legislatures in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales
  • the main concepts, theories and principles associated with business management
  • key areas of substantive law and business management and their impact on individuals, organisations, and society
  • the social, political, economic, historical, ethical, and technological dimensions shaping law and business practices in a globalised context.

Cognitive skills

On completion of this qualification, you’ll be able to:

  • ask and answer appropriate questions about law, legal systems and business management, identifying gaps in your own knowledge
  • synthesise, critically evaluate and challenge information, arguments and assumptions from a variety of legal and business sources in accordance with the theories, concepts and principles of each discipline
  • apply legal and business principles to real-world scenarios, recognising ambiguity, dealing with uncertainty, and identifying the limitations of knowledge within both fields
  • select and use accurately established techniques of analysis and enquiry outside the context in which they were first studied, and be aware of their limitations.

Practical and/or professional skills

On completion of this qualification, you’ll be able to:

  • conduct independent research in legal and business contexts, acknowledging sources of information that you have used in a style appropriate to the task
  • identify, retrieve, and evaluate information from a range of sources, including legal and business data, and present it in a manner suited to its audience and purpose
  • recognise and address ethical issues in legal and business environments, demonstrating professional responsibility in all aspects of practice
  • engage critically with practical and professional skills relevant to both disciplines, demonstrating a readiness for further study, vocational training, or employment.

Key skills

On completion of this qualification, you’ll be able to:

  • present or communicate, both orally and in writing, information about specialised topics in a way which is appropriate to your purpose and audience and which encourages the sharing of ideas and different perspectives
  • work with a range of textual, numerical and statistical data to identify, interpret, and solve complex problems, reflecting on the appropriateness and effectiveness of the processes used
  • collaborate effectively with others to achieve shared outcomes, playing active roles in facilitation, leadership, or influencing group dynamics as required
  • use a combination of formal, logical planning processes and an understanding of context to identify relevant information and risks and be able to identify alternative strategies and resources.
