Mode of study

This module’s study materials are online, comprising pages of text with images, audio/video clips of 1–15 minutes (all with transcripts/subtitles), diagrams, interactive media, animations and multiple-choice self-assessed quizzes. Online materials also include links to external resources, online forums and tutorial rooms.

Tuition strategy

This module has online tutorials and workshops. Although not compulsory, tutorials will help you consolidate your learning.

Working with others

You’ll be required to work with other students, and we assess this. This includes looking at and commenting on others’ work and working collaboratively on a task.

Practical work

Online practical work forms a required component of assessment. This includes some collaborative group work.

This module extends your knowledge of the use of an online laboratory. We’ve alternative study materials and/or advice on accessing the laboratory to enable all students to complete the module.

Mathematical and scientific expressions and notations

You’ll use mathematical and scientific symbols and expressions throughout the module and within assessment.

Diagrams and other visual content

The study materials contain a considerable number of diagrams, graphs and photographs as well as video content. Reading, interpreting and producing examples of these is an important part of the module, and we assess this. We provide descriptions for all essential figures. We provide transcripts and/or subtitles for videos.

Finding information

You’ll search for and use third-party online material, and we assess this. We can provide alternatives for required/assessed research material to enable you to meet the module’s learning outcomes.

This module includes an infographic task where you’ll use the OU Library databases and journal websites to locate an article from scientific literature. We’ll provide alternatives based on your needs to enable you to meet the learning outcomes for this activity.

Assessment

This module has tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) and an end-of-module assessment (EMA) that you submit via the online TMA/EMA service, plus interactive computer-marked assignments completed online.

Feedback

You’ll receive feedback from your tutor on your submitted tutor-marked assignments (TMAs). Feedback will help you to reflect on your TMA performance. You should refer to it to help you prepare for your next assignment.
