Educational aims

This certificate offers a thorough and well-supported grounding in the health and social care of older adults and is an ideal starting point if you are working towards a degree. The certificate’s aims are to:
  • contribute to improved practice in health and social care of adults and older adults
  • enhance knowledge and understanding of health and social care across a wide range of settings and situations

Knowledge and understanding

On completion of this certificate, you will have knowledge and understanding of:
  • a variety of caring activities from an individual and service provider perspective
  • how care is experienced and the quality of care provision for adults and older adults
  • the significance of the broader context of care and the impact of care policy
  • current debates and practices relating to the safeguarding of people’s health, well-being and human rights.

  • analyse case studies of care situations, drawing out their relevance to concepts and ideas from the module
  • develop arguments in your own words, while drawing on concepts and ideas you have read about
  • back up arguments using evidence, including statistical evidence, and other appropriate sources.

Practical and/or professional skills

On completion of this certificate, you will be able to:
  • identify aspects of care relationships which promote good care practice for adults and older adults
  • anticipate communication difficulties in care situations and develop plans to address them
  • show awareness of problems of access to care services and suggest ways to overcome them

Teaching, learning and assessment methods

Associate Lecturers support you throughout your study and are recruited both for their skills in supported open learning and knowledge of the field.

Through the use of written and audio/visual case studies, you will use analytic models to evaluate and discuss how practice can be improved. Assignments will provide opportunities to demonstrate the use of statistics and other evidence, and to draw on a range of sources in constructing an argument.

There will be a range of assessments that will include the assessment of information literacy skills.

You will be introduced to a range of theoretical tools with which to understand and analyse the provision of health and social care, and to evaluate care services and current practice.

You will be introduced concepts such as ‘risk and vulnerability’ and will demonstrate your ability to apply your understanding through online discussion and written assessment.
