Learn to see the world differently and tackle problems creatively with this design and innovation certificate. You’ll build skills in design thinking and the design process, working with inspiring study materials, online tools and practical activities. Alongside your design studies, you’ll choose a complementary subject to broaden your perspective and shape your learning path. By developing creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills, you’ll prepare yourself for future roles in design or related fields. This certificate is also the first stage of our BA/BSc (Honours) Design and Innovation.
This Certificate of Higher Education is the same as Stage 1 of our Diploma of Higher Education in Design and Innovation (W73) and BA/BSc (Honours) Design and Innovation (Q61).
This design and innovation certificate has one stage, comprising 120 credits.
You’ll study one 60-credit design module that explores creativity and design thinking. You'll also pick 60 credits of option modules in a complementary subject from either Arts or Sciences - we've created themes to help you choose.

You can achieve this certificate in as little as one year and have a maximum of seven years to complete it. Our module-by-module approach gives you the flexibility to complete your qualification at a pace that works best for you.
You can complete this certificate in one year by studying at a pace equivalent to full-time. That’s similar to a student at a campus-based university.
You can complete this certificate in two years by studying part-time. That’s roughly half the rate of a student on a full-time course at a campus-based university.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
If you’ve studied at university level before, you may be able to transfer the academic credit you've been awarded towards an OU qualification. This could save you time and money by reducing the modules you need to study.
It’s not just university study that can be considered; you can also transfer study from a wide range of professional or vocational qualifications, such as HNCs and HNDs.
You should apply to transfer credit before registering, at least four weeks before the registration closing date. We will need to know what you studied, where, and when, and you will need to provide evidence of your previous study.

The aim of this certificate is to broaden your design thinking around your own particular interests. You'll develop your understanding of the processes, principles and issues involved in designing and producing new products, and the issues and challenges associated with designing. You'll gain basic skills in applying and managing design processes and generate design ideas, concepts, proposals or solutions in response to set briefs.
The skills gained through this certificate are relevant to a wide range of careers. The ability to use design thinking in a range of context is particularly valued by employers.
