Learn key business management skills alongside French and gain an advantage in the global workplace. You’ll divide your study equally between both subjects, gaining a broad understanding of business management and a solid foundation in French. In business, you’ll explore core areas such as marketing, finance and human resources. In French, you’ll develop your understanding of the language and how it’s used in different settings. Studying French alongside business opens doors to different cultures, strengthens communication skills and broadens your career options. French is one of several languages available as part of our CertHE in Business Management and Languages.
A nationally recognised qualification in its own right, this certificate of higher education is also equivalent to the first third of the BA (Honours) Business Management and French (R55).
This business management and languages certificate has one stage, comprising 120 credits.
In the first stage, you’ll divide your study equally between business management and language.

You can achieve this certificate in as little as one year and have a maximum of seven years to complete it. Our module-by-module approach gives you the flexibility to complete your qualification at a pace that works best for you.
Please note: If you start your language at beginners level, your certificate will take a minimum of two years to complete because you can’t take beginners and intermediate modules at the same time.
You can complete this certificate in one year by studying at a pace equivalent to full-time. That’s similar to a student at a campus-based university.
You can complete this certificate in two years by studying part-time. That’s roughly half the rate of a student on a full-time course at a campus-based university.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
However, there’s a choice of starting points in the modern language element – your choice will depend on your current level of confidence and proficiency.
Unless you have prior knowledge of your chosen language equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level A1+ or level 2 of the Chinese Proficiency Test Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), we recommend you start Stage 1 with a beginners’ module.
If you intend to continue studying beyond this certificate and take the Diploma or Degree, you must study French, German or Spanish
Beginners’ and intermediate language modules are both 30-credit modules, and both start in October and end in June. Intermediate modules follow on from the learning in beginners’ modules, so you should not study them in the same language concurrently unless you already have significant knowledge of the language.

If you’ve studied at university level before, you may be able to transfer the academic credit you've been awarded towards an OU qualification. This could save you time and money by reducing the modules you need to study.
It’s not just university study that can be considered; you can also transfer study from a wide range of professional or vocational qualifications, such as HNCs and HNDs.
You should apply to transfer credit before registering, at least four weeks before the registration closing date. We will need to know what you studied, where, and when, and you will need to provide evidence of your previous study.

A qualification in business management with a language can lead to opportunities in a wide range of areas such as:
Employers are keen to utilise the commercial awareness that business graduates offer, as increasing globalisation and continual changes in technology, communications, financial services and distribution of goods and services open up new business opportunities. They value applicants who can communicate well, analyse, evaluate and present ideas and arguments effectively. This awareness can also lead to opportunities in specialist areas concerned with offering guidance to managers, such as management consultancy or business journalism. If you want to work as a translator in your chosen language, this diploma will allow you to develop a business specialism.
Many graduate-level jobs are open to graduates of any discipline, particularly in business, finance, management consultancy and the public sector. Some careers may require further study, training and/or work experience beyond your certificate.
