Curious about what shapes childhood and youth in today’s world? This diploma gives you the tools to explore the lives of children and young people through a critical, real-world lens. You’ll develop your understanding of the factors influencing children and young people in a range of social and cultural contexts, and investigate the policies, practices and challenges that affect their lives. This engaging and wide-ranging interdisciplinary diploma is ideal for anyone working with children and young people or for those with a general interest in the field, whether you're aiming to progress your career or continue towards a full degree.
A nationally recognised qualification in its own right, this Diploma of Higher Education is equivalent to the first two-thirds of the BA (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies (Q23). Similarly, our Certificate of Higher Education in Childhood and Youth Studies (T43) corresponds to the first third of the degree.
This childhood and youth studies diploma has two stages, each comprising 120 credits.
You’ll study a module that brings together perspectives on the development and lived experience of children and young people from psychology, anthropology and sociology. You’ll also choose a complementary module that fits your needs and interests.

You can achieve this diploma in as little as two years and have a maximum of 12 years to complete it. Our module-by-module approach gives you the flexibility to complete your qualification at a pace that works best for you.
You can complete this diploma in two years by studying at a pace equivalent to full-time. That’s similar to a student at a campus-based university.
You can complete this diploma in four years by studying part-time. That’s roughly half the rate of a student on a full-time course at a campus-based university.

However, two of the Stage 1 option modules do have recommendations that you gain exposure to a practice context:

If you’ve studied at university level before, you may be able to transfer the academic credit you've been awarded towards an OU qualification. This could save you time and money by reducing the modules you need to study.
It’s not just university study that can be considered; you can also transfer study from a wide range of professional or vocational qualifications, such as HNCs and HNDs.
You should apply to transfer credit before registering, at least four weeks before the registration closing date. We will need to know what you studied, where, and when, and you will need to provide evidence of your previous study.

It emphasises independent thinking, develops analytical and communication skills and will help you become a clear and confident writer – all attributes that are highly valued by employers. Specific skills you’ll develop include:
A diploma in childhood and youth studies gives you skills and knowledge relevant to many careers in childcare, health, education, working with families, play work, or working with young people. It will develop your understanding of practices and policies that affect children and introduce you to many new aspects of the subject – helping you make informed choices about future career paths. This diploma is not a professional qualification, so many of our graduates choose to undertake postgraduate training before progressing to employment in specialist fields.
Many graduate-level jobs are open to graduates of any discipline, particularly in business, finance, management consultancy and the public sector. Some careers may require further study, training and/or work experience beyond your diploma.
Once you register with us (and for up to three years after you finish your studies), you’ll have full access to our careers service for a wide range of information and advice – including online forums, website, interview simulation, vacancy service, as well as the option to email or speak to a careers adviser.
