Understanding health involves examining both scientific knowledge and healthcare practices. This certificate is relevant to employment in healthcare and health science. You’ll examine what it’s like to receive care, work in care services, and investigate particular health conditions. Drawing on science, maths, psychology and epidemiology, you’ll explore the causes and patterns of ill health and disability, and how they affect individuals and populations. By the end of the course, you’ll have developed a range of employability and study skills and an understanding of many significant health issues.
A nationally recognised qualification in its own right, this certificate of higher education is also equivalent to the first third of the BSc (Honours) Healthcare and Health Science (Q96).
This healthcare and health science certificate has one stage, comprising 120 credits.
You’ll study two 60-credit modules. You will explore the experience of receiving care and working in the care services while examining human health through science, maths, psychology and epidemiology to understand the impact of health conditions on individuals and populations.

You can achieve this certificate in as little as one year and have a maximum of four years to complete it. Our module-by-module approach gives you the flexibility to complete your qualification at a pace that works best for you.
You can complete this certificate in one year by studying at a pace equivalent to full-time. That’s similar to a student at a campus-based university.
You can complete this certificate in two years by studying part-time. That’s roughly half the rate of a student on a full-time course at a campus-based university.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
If you’ve studied at university level before, you may be able to transfer the academic credit you've been awarded towards an OU qualification. This could save you time and money by reducing the modules you need to study.
It’s not just university study that can be considered; you can also transfer study from a wide range of professional or vocational qualifications, such as HNCs and HNDs.
You should apply to transfer credit before registering, at least four weeks before the registration closing date. We will need to know what you studied, where, and when, and you will need to provide evidence of your previous study.

You will acquire a set of highly valued transferable skills, including skills in written communication, presentation and oral communication, problem-solving, time management and data analysis. The combination of healthcare and health science topics will equip you with a basic knowledge that you will be able to apply to debates on health.
This certificate will provide you with a broad understanding of both healthcare and health science and will help you to apply this understanding to a range of roles in healthcare.
