Are you interested in how social, cultural, and psychological influences shape the lives of children and young people? This engaging and wide-ranging interdisciplinary certificate gives you the tools to explore these influences across a variety of real-world contexts. You’ll investigate the policies, practices and issues that affect children and young people across a range of settings – building your knowledge, developing your analytical skills and improving your practice. Whether you're working with children and young people or simply have a general interest in their lives and experiences, this qualification offers a solid introduction into the field.
A nationally recognised qualification in its own right, this Certificate of Higher Education is equivalent to the first third of the BA (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies (Q23). Similarly, our Diploma of Higher Education in Childhood and Youth Studies (W78) is equivalent to the first two-thirds of the degree.
This childhood and youth studies certificate has one stage, comprising 120 credits.
You’ll study a module that brings together perspectives on the development and lived experience of children and young people from psychology, anthropology and sociology. You’ll also choose a complementary module that fits your needs and interests.

You can achieve this certificate in as little as one year and have a maximum of seven years to complete it. Our module-by-module approach gives you the flexibility to complete your qualification at a pace that works best for you.
You can complete this certificate in one year by studying at a pace equivalent to full-time. That’s similar to a student at a campus-based university.
You can complete this certificate in two years by studying part-time. That’s roughly half the rate of a student on a full-time course at a campus-based university.

However, two of the Stage 1 option modules do have recommendations that you gain exposure to a practice context:

If you’ve studied at university level before, you may be able to transfer the academic credit you've been awarded towards an OU qualification. This could save you time and money by reducing the modules you need to study.
It’s not just university study that can be considered; you can also transfer study from a wide range of professional or vocational qualifications, such as HNCs and HNDs.
You should apply to transfer credit before registering, at least four weeks before the registration closing date. We will need to know what you studied, where, and when, and you will need to provide evidence of your previous study.

It emphasises independent thinking, develops analytical and communication skills and will help you become a clear and confident writer – all attributes that are highly valued by employers. Specific skills you’ll develop include:
A certificate in childhood and youth studies gives you skills and knowledge relevant to many careers in childcare, health, education, working with families, playwork, or working with young people. It will develop your understanding of research, practices and policies that affect children, and introduce you to many new aspects of the subject – helping you make informed choices about future career paths. This certificate is not a professional qualification, so many of our graduates choose to undertake further/additional training before progressing to employment in specialist fields.
Once you register with us (and for up to three years after you finish your studies), you’ll have full access to our careers service for a wide range of information and advice – including online forums, website, interview simulation, vacancy service, as well as the option to email or speak to a careers adviser.
