Health and social care professionals at all levels need to be proactive and flexible to succeed. This diploma develops your critical understanding of health and social care policy, theory, and practice, which is essential in today's fast-changing care sector. Through your studies, you’ll develop the skills you need for effective practice in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment. You’ll also gain an understanding of how ethical, legal, social, economic and political factors influence the provision and development of services and be equipped to apply this knowledge in professional practice.
A nationally recognised qualification in its own right, the diploma of higher education is also equivalent to the first two thirds of the BA (Honours) Health and Social Care (R26).
This health and social care diploma has two stages, each comprising 120 credits.
Stage 1 begins with a broad introduction to the experience of giving and receiving care in a variety of clinical and care settings; within the family and community; and in residential settings. You will also have the opportunity to develop your study skills to enable you to achieve your study goals. For your second module at Stage 1, you can choose between several options, depending on your particular interests.

At Stage 2, you will explore some critical issues in health and social care in more depth. You will further develop skills to help you in your studies and in employment if that is one of your study goals. To complete Stage 2, you can choose between modules focusing on more specific areas of health and social care practice, depending on your interests, aspirations and experience.

You can achieve this diploma in as little as two years and have a maximum of eight years to complete it. Our module-by-module approach gives you the flexibility to complete your qualification at a pace that works best for you.
You can complete this diploma in two years by studying at a pace equivalent to full-time. That’s similar to a student at a campus-based university.
You can complete this diploma in four years by studying part-time. That’s roughly half the rate of a student on a full-time course at a campus-based university.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
If you’ve studied at university level before, you may be able to transfer the academic credit you've been awarded towards an OU qualification. This could save you time and money by reducing the modules you need to study.
It’s not just university study that can be considered; you can also transfer study from a wide range of professional or vocational qualifications, such as HNCs and HNDs.
You should apply to transfer credit before registering, at least four weeks before the registration closing date. We will need to know what you studied, where, and when, and you will need to provide evidence of your previous study.

The Diploma of Higher Education in Health and Social Care emphasises crossing professional boundaries and the service user's perspective and is closely attuned to care sector priorities. You'll acquire a strong set of highly valued transferable skills, including skills in written communication; finding and using research and other sources of information; problem-solving; and time management. You'll learn to work independently and as part of a team and gain a good understanding of the role of IT in care.
This diploma is applicable to a wide range of health and social care careers in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors.
The wide range of transferable skills you'll develop during your studies will be applicable to many roles outside of health and social care.
