Whether you're learning German from scratch or building on existing knowledge, this certificate takes you from beginner to intermediate level, connecting you to the people, cultures and ideas of the German-speaking world. You'll develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing while exploring the diversity of German-speaking cultures and societies. Along the way, you'll build valuable intercultural and professional skills and become a confident user of German at a level equivalent to B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). By the end, you'll be ready to use German in real-world contexts and continue your language-learning journey.
This Open University Certificate forms part of the BA (Honours) Language Studies (Q30).
This language certificate has one stage, comprising 60 credits.
You’ll study two 30-credit modules, starting with an introductory module to develop essential German speaking and listening skills for everyday contexts. This module also introduces life in German-speaking countries and communities. In the second module, you'll continue to expand your cultural, academic and professional competence, deepening your understanding of the language, the German-speaking world and intercultural communication.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. It is suitable for complete beginners.
If you’ve studied at university level before, you may be able to transfer the academic credit you've been awarded towards an OU qualification. This could save you time and money by reducing the modules you need to study.
It’s not just university study that can be considered; you can also transfer study from a wide range of professional or vocational qualifications, such as HNCs and HNDs.
You should apply to transfer credit before registering, at least four weeks before the registration closing date. We will need to know what you studied, where, and when, and you will need to provide evidence of your previous study.
