Accessibility statementMost of this module’s study materials are online. Most weeks begin with a print section in one of the module books, which can also be read online, while the rest of the week’s materials are on the module VLE. These online materials are composed of webpages of text with images, audio/video clips, and activities. Online materials also include links to external resources, online forums and online tutorial rooms.
This module provides a range of learning events, all held online, including a welcome session, tutorials, lectures by OU academics, and advanced study skills sessions. Although not compulsory, tutorials will help you consolidate your learning. You can also watch recordings of these learning events if you are not able to join them live.
You’ll be required to work with other students when completing Learning Community Activities (LCAs). You’ll have the opportunity to complete one LCA each week, and you’ll be asked to submit one example from each block to your tutor for assessment. LCAs typically involve posting a short analysis of a source on a forum and then posting a short reply commenting on another student’s post.
The study materials contain a considerable number of photographs, as well as other images, maps and tables. They also contain clips from film and television. You will learn how to analyse images and audio-visual materials as primary sources, and you will engage with visual content in activities each week. We provide descriptions for essential figures.
You will be required to search for and make use of third-party material online. This includes online databases as well as the OU Library. We can provide alternatives for required/assessed research material to enable you to meet the learning outcomes of the module.
This module has four tutor-marked assignments and an end-of-module assessment.
You’ll receive feedback from your tutor on your submitted tutor-marked assignments (TMAs). This will help you to reflect on your TMA performance. You should refer to it to help you prepare for your next assignment.
We structure all University modules to a set timetable, and you’ll need time-management skills to keep your studies on track. We’ll support you in developing these skills.
