Much of this module’s study materials are online. These are composed of pages of text with images, audio/video clips of 2-10 minutes (all with transcripts and subtitles), diagrams, interactive media, animations, and self-assessment quizzes. Online materials also include links to external resources, online forums and tutorial rooms. Printed materials are only provided for the two module books.
This module provides a range of learning events and online tutorials. Although not compulsory, tutorials will help you consolidate your learning.
You’ll be required to work with other students and your self-reflections on this work. This includes looking at and commenting on others’ work and reflecting on others’ comments on your work.
You’ll be required to use mathematical and scientific symbols and expressions throughout the module and within the assessment.
The study materials contain a considerable number of diagrams/graphs/photographs. Reading/interpreting/producing examples of these is an important part of studying this module, and we assess this. We provide descriptions for all essential figures.
You will be required to search for and make use of third-party material online, and we assess this. We can provide alternatives for required/assessed research material to enable you to meet the learning outcomes of the module.
This module includes data analysis activities carried out using specialised software (Stata). You will be required to enter commands in Stata and interpret the output generated by the program. Alternative activities, which focus on the interpretation of the output, are provided. Students will also use NVivo to organise and analyse qualitative data. Alternative activities that use pen and paper or Word are available.
You’ll be working with specialist reading material such as mathematical notation. We’ll present these online and in printed form.
This module has tutor-marked assignments and an end-of-module assessment.
You’ll receive feedback from your tutor on your submitted tutor-marked assignments (TMAs). This will help you to reflect on your TMA performance. You should refer to it to help you prepare for your next assignment. Some TMAs will provide an opportunity for feedback on the early stages of preparing your project.
We structure all University modules to a set timetable, and you’ll need time-management skills to keep your studies on track. We’ll support you in developing these skills.
This module uses specialist symbols that standard accessibility tools don’t cover. The module materials and assessment ask you to use the following specialist software: Stata, NVivo, and LaTeX, and may not be fully accessible as a result. We will provide alternative accessible activities for non-accessible materials. For example, Stata's statistical output will be provided. Coding of text can be done manually or using Word instead of NVivo.
