This module’s study materials are online, comprising pages of text with images, audio/video clips of 2–30 minutes (all with transcripts/subtitles), diagrams, interactive media, animations and multiple-choice self-assessed quizzes. Online materials also include links to external resources, online forums and online tutorial rooms. We can provide printed versions of all content except interactive GIS and fieldwork activities.
This module has online tutorials. Although not compulsory, tutorials will help you consolidate your learning.
You’ll be required to work with other students, and we assess this. This includes working collaboratively on a project.
Online/laboratory-based and field-based practical work forms a required component of assessment. This includes some collaborative group work.
This module introduces an online ‘living lab’. We’ve prepared advice on accessing the Open Living Lab to enable all students to complete the module.
This module includes a compulsory field school in the form of an intensive four-day residential school or a one-week online equivalent learning experience.
You’ll use mathematical and scientific symbols and expressions throughout the module and within assessment.
The study materials contain a considerable number of diagrams, graphs and photographs. Reading, interpreting and producing examples of these is an important part of this module, and we assess this. We provide descriptions for all essential figures.
You’ll search for and use third-party online material, and we assess this. We can provide alternatives for required/assessed research material to enable you to meet the module’s learning.
This module has tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) and an end-of-module assessment (EMA) that you submit via the online TMA/EMA service.
You’ll receive feedback from your tutor on your submitted Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs). Feedback will help you reflect on your TMA performance. You should refer to it to help you prepare for your next assignment.
We structure all University modules to a set timetable, and you’ll need time-management skills to keep your studies on track. We’ll support you in developing these skills.
