All of this module’s study materials are online. Online materials are composed of pages of text with images, audio clips, video clips (most with transcripts/subtitles), diagrams, interactive media and animations. Online materials also include links to external resources, online forums and online tutorial rooms.
This module provides two types of learning events: online module-wide and tutor group tutorials. Although not compulsory, attendance at tutorials will help you consolidate your learning.
You’ll be required to work with other students when carrying out some home and online experimental investigations. This will probably take the form of a forum discussion or online tutorial.
Online laboratory work and home experiments are required components of assessment. This includes some collaborative group work.
This module introduces you to the use of an online laboratory. We are preparing alternative study materials for students who are unable to use the online laboratory, to enable students to complete the module.
You’ll be required to use mathematical and scientific symbols and expressions throughout the module and within assessment.
The study materials contain a considerable number of diagrams and graphs. Reading, interpreting and producing examples of these is an important part of the study of this module and is assessed. Figure descriptions are provided for some figures.
You may be required to search for, and make use of, third party material online. This forms part of the assessment. We can provide alternatives for required/assessed research material to enable you to meet the learning outcomes of the module.
In this module you will be working with specialist reading material such as chemical notation. We’ll present these via third-party software.
This module has tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) that you must submit via the online TMA service and a remote exam. For chemical structures in TMAs (only after prior agreement with your tutor), we will accept scanned/hand-drawn versions if you cannot physically use the software.
You’ll receive feedback from your tutor on your submitted Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs). This will help you to reflect on your TMA performance. You should refer to it to help you prepare for your next assignment.
We structure all University modules to a set timetable and you’ll need time-management skills to keep your studies on track. We’ll support you in developing these skills.
The module materials and assessment ask you to use the following specialist software/symbols: Excel or OpenOffice Calc, BIOVIADraw or ACD ChemSketch, JSME and JSMol or equivalent, and may not be fully accessible as a result. This module also uses specialist symbols that are not covered by standard accessibility tools. Where possible, alternative versions are provided to allow students who are unable to use these packages to meet the learning outcomes.
