Waiting on results, or rethinking your options? Clearing is one route to a university place – but it isn't the only one. Here's how it works, who it's for, and why the OU lets you skip it altogether.
University Clearing is a UCAS process that allows students to apply for courses at universities that still have available places. It typically runs from July to October.
Students use Clearing when they:
Clearing isn't the only way into university. You might want more flexibility, have missed a deadline, or simply prefer a different route. Other options include direct applications, apprenticeships and foundation years.
At the OU, you apply directly for any of our courses – no UCAS, no Clearing, and most courses have no entry requirements. It's a smarter, more flexible way to go to university.

I couldn’t find a course at a brick university I liked which still offered me the flexibility to work and remain living at home. Studying via distance learning isn’t a lonely experience.
