International student studying using Open University course materials
You do not usually need a formal English language qualification to study with the OU, but you will need a reasonable standard of written and spoken English to get the most from your course.
For many OU courses, you do not need to provide a formal English language qualification. You will, however, need enough English to understand study materials, communicate with your tutor and other students, and complete assignments.
Reading is central to university study. You should be comfortable reading longer pieces of English, identifying key points, selecting relevant information and thinking critically about evidence and arguments.
You will need to write clearly in English for assignments and, where relevant, exams. This includes structuring ideas, using evidence from your study materials and writing in your own words.
Speaking and listening skills will help you take part in tutorials, communicate with your tutor and ask for support when you need it. Many learning events are online, so confidence with spoken English can help you feel more connected.
If you are not sure whether your English is strong enough, our Developing academic English guide is a useful place to start. It covers the academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills you will use throughout your studies, with practical activities and links to free OpenLearn courses to help you build confidence before you register. You may also want to allow extra study time, especially if academic reading or writing in English is new to you.
I would recommend the OU to anybody. It’s so flexible that whatever your age, educational background or circumstances in life; you’ll be supported all the way – the OU has got you covered.
