This postgraduate diploma will provide you with a strong grounding in law in context and the interactions between law and society across areas such as business, criminal justice, the environment, human rights, and international law. You’ll engage with questions of justice and sustainability and examine different approaches to legal problems. Through guided study, you’ll develop strong research skills and learn to analyse complex issues using evidence and interdisciplinary perspectives. You’ll build critical thinking, legal analysis and practical skills that enhance your employability and prepare you for further study or a wide range of professional roles.
To gain this qualification, you need 120 credits. You'll study two compulsory 60-credit modules.

By studying the Postgraduate Diploma in Law, you’ll:
You’ll be supported in building advanced legal research expertise and critical thinking skills for further study or legal-related careers.
You’ll be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Law upon successful completion. You’ll be entitled to use the letters PG Dip (Open) after your name.
Your postgraduate diploma may be awarded with a distinction or a merit. The qualification regulations explain the criteria you’ll need to meet to earn one of these classifications.

You’ll study the Postgraduate Diploma in Law part-time, completing 60 credits a year over two years. Typically, this means 16–20 study hours each week.
The recommended hours include time to work through that week’s online study planner, complete recommended reading, and attend tutorials.
You must complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Law within five years.

You will be expected to have an honours degree (in any subject).
Your spoken and written English must be of an adequate standard for postgraduate study. If English is not your first language, we recommend a minimum score of 6.5 under the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Please see the IELTS website for details.
Credit transfer is not available for November 2026 registrations as some of the curriculum is currently in development. If you would like to begin your studies in November 2026, we will start accepting credit transfer applications from March 2027.
You’ll pay for your qualification one module at a time, rather than the full cost upfront. The fee for each module is listed in its description.

This postgraduate diploma is designed for both law graduates and non-law graduates. It provides a strong grounding in law in context while consolidating and building upon the existing knowledge and skills of LLB graduates in England and Wales, as well as those with legal qualifications from other jurisdictions.
You will develop the ability to articulate the qualities, knowledge, and transferable skills needed to achieve your personal and/or career goals. This qualification encourages you to reflect on how your learning supports your development and the directions it may take you. It can lead to a range of career pathways, including legal practice, business or public administration, policy and research roles in central or local government or the third sector, as well as doctoral study in law or related fields.
